Serious response: People have tried this before, and it's only been a good idea thrice.

The Church of the SubGenius was probably before a lot of people's time, and it was pretty underground, mainly existing on BBS's and Usenet. (I'll lay good odds that a few folk here knew of it.)

The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster was unabashedly tongue-in-cheek, and did a wonderful job at being so, but failed as a challenger to religious privilege as a direct result of that.

The Satanic Temple, an explicitly atheistic but avowedly religious organisation is doing a better job on that front, since they are quite honestly serious about being religious.

Of the three, if I was going to join any it would be the latter, but there's no way in fuck that's ever going to happen, because religion to me is inherently doctrinaire and dogmatic, and I am firmly convinced that that particular quirk of the human psyche is deeply harmful and likely to be the end of us all.

Plus, despite the fact that I have an ongoing thread weaving through my online life called Cooking Outside with Geoff, I don't like barbecues per the Aussie tradition. So, no, I won't be joining your flock.

There is, of course, also the Sunday Assembly, which is church without the god bits. You know, group singing and someone giving a talk and all that. Can't abide it, myself.

But I used to be a pub manager. One day, one of the regulars asked me if I was coming to church on Sunday. For a second, I was confused (I'm regularly confused). Then I realised: he was talking about the Sunday Session. You know, get together in a social environment, probably have one or more people spout off on some topic dear to their heart, repeat a bunch of in-group recognition signals, partake or ritualistic ingestion of spiritous libation, and end up throughly confuddled at the end of it. And at some point, there would be singing.

Aside from the fact that this involved various people I didn't like and whom I couldn't justify delivering physical harm to - and many who couldn't sustain an intelligent conversation to save their fucking life - it was much more my cup of tea. Or pint of lager, for accuracy.

Somewhere in the mess that passes for a paper archive, there's a pic of me, long before the Actual Clergy Gig, on stage at some dive, clerical collar and all, hosting just such a session.

There weren't ushers, but there were strippers.

We do some odd stuff for a buck.

I think this would be better suited to somewhere other than the Intro section.

Thankyou Mr Black for the housekeeping, and Odd for the spelling suggestion. Humorous comments about cooking styles add flavour to the conversation and show atheists to be a funny bunch. Not particularly interested in discussing the future of atheism but quick to quip.

It was a fun metaphor, and I ran with it.

Future of atheism? Not a religion, I hope.

Goldenmane has said it eloquently already.

For everything else, there's that Journey song from the mirror universe: "Don't Stop Not Believing".

Seems the idea might have hit a snag.

That's a fine notion, but you didn't cite your sauce.

Theist have had their day. The only reason they still pay the man in the cloud is because there is no alternative, but one is already forming.
We already have ceremonies where we dress up, bring offerings, sing the special song on the special day, pay homage to our elders and cremate the last snag that nobody wanted. Aussie Barbies!
Therefore I suggest that the Aussie Barby is the seed of the new atheist religion. Your thoughts?

As GM mentioned, there is already the Sunday Assembly.
Atheism is not a religion.
Why would you want it to be one?
