This afternoon: Masked Plover, warning Dog V2.0 and me that we were too close to baby.

Then things got a bit more serious. Nice wing spurs!

A mighty bird the masked plover, sharp bits not to be taken lightly. I've come across people that absolutely hate them but i kind of like the fact that they occasionally attack humans. A bird with gumption! A little reminder we don't own the planet.

A bit o' botany from yesterday arvo's dog walk:

1. Female satin bower bird. 2. The elusive male, for this time of year, which I followed and found his bower. 3. Beautifully decorated. There were four females in the area, he must be quite the designer. (I left him a square of blue cardboard in exchange for the photo).

Today, I heard the call of an Eastern Koel (Eudynamys orientalis) in the nearby tall gum trees, heralding their return (they're a migratory species, and it seems that the same pair, or family members, return to the same spot each year).

Here's an image of a female, albeit from 5 years ago:

And one of one of her "offspring":

KoelJuvenile.jpg

They're cuckoos, so this was probably the "foster parent" feeding the juvenile; a Red Wattlebird (Anthochaera carunculata)

I'm not looking forward to their usual plaintive calls, at 3:00-4:00am. I've heard them referred to as the "wind me up" bird, which you'll understand if you listen to their call:

EDIT:

And here's a juvenile male Koel.

Fantastic looking birds two dogs! I've never seen one. My bird guide says the males are black. 4am is quite inconsiderate.

Apparently the adult males are entirely black, but unfortunately I've yet to see one, let alone have an opportunity to photograph one.
