Sydney 2000: Not Very Vaxxy

Quote:
Sydney's 2000 postcode has the worst childhood vaccination rate in the country, national data reveals.

A deep dive into vaccination rates by suburb shows vast disparities between neighbouring communities and some alarmingly low vaccination rates in Sydney and NSW.

Just 70.5 per cent of five year old children were fully vaccinated in the area encompassing the Sydney CBD, Millers Point, Haymarket, Dawes Point, The Rocks, shows 2015-2015 immunisation data released Thursday.

More than one in four children (122) in this age group living in this area have not received all the vaccinations listed on the National Immunisation Program Schedule, found the Healthy Communities report.

It's weird (or maybe not) that this blindness seems to effect the educated middle classes. On a study of one person I know of I'm not sure what the answer is. They have immersed themselves so deep in all the dubious information from non-experts, like the deeply religious, they'll do any amount of mental gymnastics to carry on believing they're right.

ACT: Sneaky Screening of "Vaxxed" Film, Wakefield To Attend. - Fairfax linky

Quote:
The Australian Vaccination Skeptics Network is planning a screening of the controversial film Vaxxed at a secret location in Canberra this month.

The documentary film is directed by Andrew Wakefield, a former doctor whose debunked study was central to the anti-vaccination movement.

The controversial 1998 research paper focused on a link between measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism was published and then later retracted by the medical journal Lancet.

It was axed from several events both internationally and in Australia, including the New York based Tribeca Film Festival and Victoria's Castlemaine Local and International Film Festival (CLIFF) in 2016.

Screenings worldwide have sparked debate about whether it is right to give a platform to something that has the capacity to affect public safety.

However the Australian Vaccination Skeptics Network contends the documentary "is not anti-vaccination" but is rather an investigation into an alleged cover-up by the US Centre of Disease control.

The event website states due to "well-orchestrated threats of violence and abuse that come from the pro-censorship community" ticket holders will be sent location details two hours beforehand.

Mr Wakefield will field questions from the crowd in a live Skype session after the screening set to be held on Monday, July 31.

Screening at a secret location? What's the point?

Burden of proof is the obligation on somebody presenting a claim to provide evidence to support its truth (a warrant). Once evidence has been presented, it is up to any opposing "side" to show the evidence presented is not adequate. If claims were accepted without warrants, then every claim could simultaneously be claimed to be true.

History isn't written by the victors. It's written by the people with the time machines.

It's Cult Building 101:

The organisers will let all their supporters know at the last minute, and the "team activity" of the local anti-vaxers all getting to the "secret location", and being fed with the film's propaganda, will be highly reinforcing.

Also, protesters are likely to find out at the last minute, but have lesser time to pressure the venue. They're still attend and protest (albeit in lesser numbers), which is also likely to reinforce the 'them'/'us' dynamic felt by the watchers of the film.
