Your're a lovely little girl Protium.

Untill the brocolli issue is resolved I'm afraid I will remain confused. Maybe it's because xians don't eat brocolli as I can't see a single comment on this video at youtube which isn't from a xian. That might explain the omission of brocolli from the sum total of knowledge. Oops, did I just learn something else, sorry.

I hunt broccoli regularly, without gaining any more knowledge how will I be able to take down any more big uns? This is quite a shock I must say, you have to keep on your toes with them, continually learning ... Hence I may have to stick with the less savage cauliflower. They are pretty predictable.

Welcome to the forum Christian issues, hope you enjoy your time gazing into the abyss

You look as good as you ever do Protium

I have quite a few verses from the bible where I am sure doing what it says would be wonderful for some, less so for others, but I doubt we will get a rigorous answer to any of it.

Perhaps Croc could return with his "kill for god" question, if Mick ever wants to talk about any of this rather than preaching.

The following video clearly shows that tongues, prophecy and knowledge have ceased.

God bless,

Jim-dandy. But the reasons tongues is on the agenda (such as it is) is because so many christians think it's the go.

So why are you telling us? Are you telling them?

P.S. my view, and I suspect a widespread one here, is that not only have tongues passed away, they never were.

Welcome Mick,

I would propose to you that tongues and prophecy never existed in the first place.

1Corinthians says all that? Clearly, when it comes to interpretation, the body parts of christ do not agree with one another ...

Ah, the good ol' cessationists.

When I was in the Pastor Factory, we learned the cessationist arguments, and then, because we were pentecostal, we also learned the arguments for the holy spirit being the sole active agent of god among people, and reasons why tongues, prophecy and knowledge were current.
Cessationism has weak biblical justification, because the bible says
that certain members of the body of Christ (otherwise know as the church) are given gifts by the holy spirit to speak in different languages, heal others, cast out demons and said nothing about these 'gifts' having ceased being given.

Quote:
Now, of course, both arguments are dependent on the existence of a god. And about there beginneth the train-wreck.
I fully agree with you.

With Christianity around, knowledge is definitely very slow.

A little something from the ex-xtian Reddit.

Quote:
I got a question earlier about what speaking in tongues is like, and I realized I've been asked this a lot by folks from more "normal" churches (lol). I'm also curious if my experience is similar to any other Pentecostals or other charismatics or if it's unusual. Questions or comments on your own experiences are welcome!

SO, UPCs believe you have to speak in tongues or you're not saved, so there's a lot of pressure to "receive the gift of the holy spirit". You can only do this after you've been baptized, and you have to decide to be baptized of your own free will. I was probably 11 or 12 when I decided I was ready to be baptized in my bathtub by my parents and, every Sunday after that, we went to church (which we usually didn't do) to try to get me to speak in tongues.

The process would start after the service during the alter call. I'd go down to the front and usually inform someone that I'm trying to get the gift of tongues. I'd stand there and pray fervently and frantically while people and elders would all gather and crowd around me, laying their hands on my head and shoulders and back and face, praying, speaking in tongues, pushing me back and forth, shaking me by the shoulders, shouting, crying, and pressing up against me. You get a lot of sweat and spittle on you (ew). I'm not sure how long this lasted but I'm pretty sure it could be well over an hour. It was sweltering hot from the press of bodies around me. I was deafened by all of the noise and strange sounds. I'd be encouraged to shout and cry and beg and scream until my voice gave out. By the end of each session I'd be shaking, dehydrated from sweating and shouting, often unable to speak because of throwing out my voice.

I think it was the third of these bizarre sessions that something suddenly glitched in my brain. I found myself speaking nonsense syllables rapid-fire. My body was shaking and I felt like I was in some weird trance or euphoria state and like I couldn't stop. I felt like something else was controlling me. The sounds just kept coming and, of course, I was immensely relieved because this meant that I was now saved. My body flooded with adrenaline and endorphines and it felt like an overwhelming spiritual experience. Eventually the euphoric trance began to fade, I calmed down, and I stopped babbling. Everyone congratulated me and my parents were thrilled. I felt great.

After that first time, it was super-easy to slip into a similar trance state again. It's like my brain had learned how to do it, and if I put myself in the right frame of mind, I could easily replicate the noises and the sense of spiritual euphoria. It was easiest to induce if there was music with a lot of repetition of words, I was swaying back and forth, and other people around me were doing it or at least making a lot of noise. It was possible to do it alone but the experience was generally much less intense. Even now, I could probably replicate it, but I haven't tried because I now find the idea of being in that state really unnerving. Even being around people who are praying in a sing-songy way or are speaking in tongues triggers a dissociative state in me that I'm pretty sure is primed from my previous tongues-speaking experiences. I feel like being in that out-of-control state isn't healthy and probably primes you to be a lot more open to suggestion and manipulation. At the time that I practiced, though, I enjoyed it.

After I left the UPC doctrine and no longer really bought into "spiritual gifts" I found my tongues-speaking experience really confusing. A lot of people claimed that all tongues-speaking is just people faking it, but that definitely wasn't my experience. I worried that it was real, and didn't know what that meant for my lack of belief. At this point, though, I figure it's just an altered brain-state brought on by a chaotic and stressful environment and a lot of social pressure which, once learned, was easy to replicate.
This has some parallels to my own experience, although there are also differences.
