Default Climate Change

Starting a new thread on climate change news because i can't find a general thread on the topic but we should have one i reckon. (we possibly should have a whole directory given that climate change is pretty much the most crucial 21st century issue, at least imo)

Anyhow, what about 'our' new NZ PM, via cnn.

Quote:
New Zealand's new leader: We must be ready for 'climate refugees'

New Zealand's new leader, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, tells CNN that her country must be prepared to take in "climate change refugees" from surrounding island nations.

"We need to acknowledge that we are, unless we make dramatic changes, at the front of seeing refugees as a result of climate change," Arden told CNN's Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview, her first since taking office last Thursday.

"We see a duty of care there -- both to champion internationally the importance of acknowledging and responding to climate change, but also doing our bit."

The country currently takes in about 750 refugees each year, per United Nations mandates, according to the government.
"We're looking to ways to build in the responsibility we have on climate change and the way that we approach, potentially, climate change refuges in the future amongst our neighbors," said the prime minister.

In order to govern, Ardern's Labour Party entered into coalition with a conservative, anti-immigration New Zealand First Party.

She denied, however, that her government's policy would be affected in the area of refugees, saying she had worked "very hard" to build consensus, and was committed on doubling the country's refugee quota.

How is it possible that NZ get someone like this and we get Abbott, Malcolm Roberts and Eric Abetz? How is that possible? What the fuck is wrong with us?

Technically it's not that, it's just that someone else bought them before we got to put a bid in! I blame lack of due process, they should have been put out to tender and the cheapest bid accepted. At least then I would have had a look in!

This article in the Guardian today shows why it's hard not to be a silly fatalist. It is inevitable there be catastrophic migrations, abandonments for somewhere to live. Food supply, medicine and every other good and convenience of modern life will become unprocurable. People will be left to perish in their multitudes. How can the spectre of flooding on this scale as it unfolds not precipitate WW111?

It makes the beautiful thought of having kids something to reconsider.

Unsustainability was the word of the 20th Century. Too little too late I fear.

Climate change
The three-degree world: the cities that will be drowned by global warming

'The UN is warning that we are now on course for 3C of global warming. This will ultimately redraw the map of the world

When UN climate negotiators meet for summit talks this month, there will be a new figure on the table: 3C.

Until now, global efforts such as the Paris climate agreement have tried to limit global warming to 2C above pre-industrial levels. However, with latest projections pointing to an increase of 3.2C by 2100, these goals seem to be
slipping out of reach.'

Because of my ineptitude with my phone, I am unable to link to the Guardian article in US NEWS - Donald Trump Accused of Obstructing Sattelite Research Into Climate Change.

It deserves looking up anyway.

How can this be happening?

Climate Science Special Report

This report is an authoritative assessment of the science of climate change, with a focus on the United States. It represents the first of two volumes of the Fourth National Climate Assessment, mandated by the Global Change Research Act of 1990.

I'll just link this report that came out last friday. Researched by 53 US based climate scientists. I'm reading through bits of it, it's all very grim really but it's comforting to know that science is still actually being conducted in the US, at least for now.

Well, I should actually count the papers, but it seems to me there is a drop-off in volume. Except in gee-wizz technical stuff that can make money.
