Default Orwellian China Under Xi Jingping

Wondering which Topic to slot this in.

I am sure all will concur that democracy and human rights are or should be incorporated in the atheist worldview, quite naturally. Atheism results from seeking to make sense of the world; it is a stance for science, reason and promotion of universal well-being, human flourishing and of the biome.

WW111 must never come to pass. As it did when Dylan sang A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, the spectre of it seems real once more. Such a shame, the experiment of modernisation suddenly all over. There might be survivors.

John F. Kennedy on the hotline to Moscow talked sense into Nikita Khrushchev about mutual assured destruction (MAD). Nikita finally capitulated and at the last hour ordered his fleet to turn around. They were carrying nuclear missiles to the pads constructed for them in Cuba so as to obliterate strategic American cities, Oct-Nov 1962. Cold War.

The maxim said by Mao Zedong, 'political power grows out of the barrel of a gun,' merely represents male bellicosity. How primitive, how primal.

'China tells world to stay out of its 'domestic affairs' over Liu Xiaobo's death
Beijing dismisses ‘improper remarks’ over decision to not allow democracy advocate to be treated overseas for liver cancer.

China has pushed back against a wave of international censure over the death of democracy advocate Liu Xiaobo, telling the world to stay out of its “domestic affairs” and labelling the 2010 decision to award the late activist a Nobel peace prize “a blasphemy”.

Should we now also get worried about China in addition to North Korea?

We should be concerned about patriarchy and its bellicosity.

Angela Merkel was spot on in her call to Trump, calling him out over his knee-jerk reciprocated yet infinitely heavier threat to Kim. Trump the reactionary. Typical.

He brushed it off as Merkel merely 'speaking for Germany.'

If we go back to the beginnings of things, we shall always find that ignorance and fear created the gods; that imagination, rapture and deception embellished them; that weakness worships them; that custom spares them; and that tyranny favours them in order to profit from the blindness of men. In some cases it is cheaper and easier to gradually buy a country than to invade it.

Xi Jingping is cracking down hard. He is manuring a cult of personality about himself.

Xi has big ambitions to be bigger than Mao and Zhou Enlai ever were.

Cambridge University Press faces boycott over China censorship.

'Academics pressure publisher as Beijing mouthpiece says western institutions can leave if they don’t like ‘the Chinese way.'

'Cambridge University Press must reject China’s “disturbing” censorship demands or face a potential boycott of its publications, academics have warned, as a Communist party newspaper attacked critics of Beijing’s information war as “arrogant and absurd”'.

Xi Jinping
'A whirlwind of charisma!': China propaganda blitz hails Xi, the Great Statesman

Quote:
A six-part television extravaganza starring the president as he bestrides the world is designed to cement his role ahead of October’s party congress
Quote:
As part of that PR offensive, a string of big-budget “documentaries” – in reality slick, state-funded advertorials – have received a prime-time billing. Earlier this summer, one such series hailed what it portrayed as Xi’s relentless assault on corruption and – despite a notorious crackdown on human rights lawyers and activists – his bid to advance the rule of law.
Military madness. Authoritarianism. The corridors and urinals of power.
