An interesting eventuality to contemplate.

Sudanese people would have a better chance at survival than Americans. The Sudanese grow millet from ancestral wild type and are pastoralists. Traditional societies have subsistence worked out.

America is awash with guns. With the complete breakdown of institutions, life would be nasty, brutish and short. There would be no social contract. Nukes and nuclear power plants would not be maintained. Fires would not be contained. Disease and killing would prevail.

All of our food comes from giant seed supply corporations like Monsanto. It is hybridised and may be genetically modified, and is not viable - you can't get a crop from sowing it. Supermarket potatoes say 'not for planting.'

Australia now has domesticable animals, whose ancestors originate from Mesopotamia. They have undergone huge artificial selection. Their ancestors were intelligent survivors. That has been bred out of them.

We in the developed world are completely implicated in and dependent on industrialisation and electronic information and communications. Food comes through logistics. Our tenure is fragile.

Many Sudanese could survive, or outback indigenous people where bushcraft and culture is still being practised, where the environment ensures only they could survive it, having undergone adaptation to it over 60,000 years.
Certainly nuclear war would probably result in a reversal of the normal death rates and disproportionately affect urban dwellers in wealthy countries directly first.
