I’ve been an atheist ever since I heard there was only a stairway to heaven” – Stella Young, 1982-2014.

The Atheist Foundation of Australia is saddened to hear of the passing of Stella Young, an educator, a writer, a comedian and a passionate and uncompromising advocate for challenging perceptions of disability. Her work with national broadcaster ABC, appearances on TEDx and Q&A, shows and presentations reflect her purpose-filled and well-lived life.

As Clementine Ford wrote on The Drum website – Stella Young was more than capable of speaking for herself:

In case I get hit by a bus tomorrow, I want to make something clear – I am not a snowflake. I am not a sweet, infantilising symbol of fragility and life. I am a strong, fierce, flawed adult woman. I plan to remain that way, in life and in death.”

Those of us fortunate to be there, remember Stella's performance at the 2012 Global Atheist Convention as one of the highlights of that weekend. What she had to say was so funny and so, so true. We are grateful for her sharp, yet humane insights. Vale Stella Young.
