The Atheist Foundation of Australia rejects fundamentalist and tyrannical efforts to terrorise and silence modern civilisation and progress, and the recent news of attacks in Paris, Baghdad and Beiruit is no exception.
These horrific events are a sobering reminder of the importance of humanist values, and the need to prevail together against such violence. It is notable that French President Francois Hollande referred to the Paris tragedy as an “an act of war that was committed by a terrorist army” and we should be mindful that there is no overwhelming support or justification for the actions taken by a few.
In the light of numerous efforts to silence thinkers, artists, and activists worldwide – whether near or far from Australia, such as Paris, Sinai, Baghdad, Beirut or elsewhere – we stand in solidarity and support for their collective safety and their freedom.
